RJR makes statement on security issue
Kingston.  November 21, 2009.        The RJR Communications Group has for the past week resisted comment on the reports of threats against the security of the Group.  We now find it necessary to state the facts to avoid any further confusion.

Radio Jamaica was advised by a Police team that arrived at our organisation on Sunday afternoon that they had been sent to establish a presence at the organisation because of intelligence report of a threat against the organisation.  They outlined their security detail and the management took its own security measures.

Radio Jamaica did not claim to receive a threat and did not report receiving a threat.  We responded to the Police advice based on their intelligence.

The management at the level of Managing Director, within an hour made contact with the Commissioner of Police, the Minister of National Security and the Minister with Responsibility for Information and discussed the matter.  Follow up discussions have taken place with some of these persons.

We have noted with concern the comments of the General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, Mr. Karl Samuda on this matter and have since advised him of the facts in this matter and he should have a full appreciation for the circumstances.

All our actions have been out of concern for the safety and security of our staff and our property.

Our resolve for more than half a century has been to be fair, balanced and vigilant in our journalism.  We have been fully committed to freedom of the press, free speech and a free press.
